Xu De Jia's square tea bowl is a more modern take on tradition. The straight sides of the bowl is marked by a sharp swell close to the base that not only provides visual interest but also provides a comfortable resting place for cupped palms.

Each square bowl is hand-shaped by master ceramicist Xu De Jia and glazed in either a sapphire celadon, or an antique linen. The celadon color is a creamy sapphire blue, while the antique linen, flecked with iron oxide freckles, appears aged. Both will patina with use, and develop a network of crazing that will deepen in color with time.

Because this is hand-made, there will be slight variations in size and shape of each bowl, and each will have its own signature of crackles.

HOW TO USE

Tea bowls are the simplest vessels for brewing tea. There are just a few things to watch out for when using one.

Begin by selecting higher grade teas that will not go bitter or astringent with longer steeps. When browsing our tea selection, pay attention to the teas for which we've provided tea bowl brewing guides - these are the teas we recommend for use in a bowl.

Pre-warm the teabowl and add a small amount of tea.

Pour water from at least six inches above the bowl to make sure the tea leaves are agitated and are evenly moistened. Because we do not rinse our tea leaves for tea bowl use, the agitation is important to ensure that all the tea leaves are properly pre-moistened.

Lastly, fill the bowl only half way with water with each brew, and enjoy.
