Tianmu Tea Bowl, Si

DIMENSIONS
volume: 10.1oz / 300cc
height: 2.8"
diameter: 5"

Commissioned in January 2011, this piece is hand-crafted by Taiwanese ceramicist Xu De Jia. Its shape and glaze pays homage to the renowned Jianware tea bowls of Song Dynasty fame.

The shape of this tea bowl follows traditional lines. The opening is wide, featuring a slight indentation around the top edge to accommodate the lower lip and ease tea sipping. The body gradually tapers down to a narrow unglazed foot. On the inside, the shape of the tea bowl pools tea leaves at the bottom.

The glaze has the appearance of partridge spots, an effect created by the separation of iron oxide particles from the dark base glaze during firing, and the setting of those particles during reduction. On this bowl, these spots have a reddish brown matte appearance, resembling the feathers on a partridge's breast. The same matte coloration can be seen along the top edge of the bowl, a result of higher iron oxide concentration on this thinner glazed part of the bowl.

Each Xu De Jia Tianmu bowl is unique and stamped with the artist's signature.

HOW TO USE

Tea bowls are the simplest vessels for brewing tea. There are just a few things to watch out for when using one.

Begin by selecting higher grade teas that will not go bitter or astringent with longer steeps. When browsing our tea selection, pay attention to the teas for which we've provided tea bowl brewing guides - these are the teas we recommend for use in a bowl.

Pre-warm the teabowl and add a small amount of tea.

Pour water from at least six inches above the bowl to make sure the tea leaves are agitated and are evenly moistened. Because we do not rinse our tea leaves for tea bowl use, the agitation is important to ensure that all the tea leaves are properly pre-moistened.

Lastly, fill the bowl only half way with water with each brew, and enjoy.
