Taiwanese ceramicist Xu De Jia's first venture into tea ware was crafting Song Dynasty tea bowls. His experience with this form shines through in both the shape and the glaze of this piece, commissioned in January 2011.

The shape of this piece stays true to traditional Jianware lines, with a wide opening that gradually tapers to a small foot. A slight indentation running below the top edge accommodates the lower lips and eases sipping. The bowl itself is balanced, both standing on its own and cupped in the hands.

The exceptionally beautiful glazing is the unique signature of this bowl. Iron rich droplets drawn out of the glaze melt, run down and streak the glaze, creating the wonderful black and coffee marbling effect of this bowl. Near the foot of the bowl, the coalescing glaze forms organic running drips and pools, giving the glaze the appearance of liquid.

Each Xu De Jia Tianmu bowl is unique and stamped with the artist's signature.

HOW TO USE

Tea bowls are the simplest vessels for brewing tea. There are just a few things to watch out for when using one.

Begin by selecting higher grade teas that will not go bitter or astringent with longer steeps. When browsing our tea selection, pay attention to the teas for which we've provided tea bowl brewing guides - these are the teas we recommend for use in a bowl.

Pre-warm the teabowl and add a small amount of tea.

Pour water from at least six inches above the bowl to make sure the tea leaves are agitated and are evenly moistened. Because we do not rinse our tea leaves for tea bowl use, the agitation is important to ensure that all the tea leaves are properly pre-moistened.

Lastly, fill the bowl only half way with water with each brew, and enjoy.
