In 2011, we commissioned craftsman in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, to hand-craft gaiwans for us.
Our requirements were simple but specific: we wanted the gaiwans made from thin high fired porcelain - so thin, in fact, that they would appear translucent if held up against light. Their shapes needed to be graceful and wonderful to behold as well as to use.
Our Jingdezhen Summer gaiwan is one of two styles we commissioned. The Summer gaiwan has a short, wide profile, allowing for lower temperature brews of delicate green teas or general tea brewing when the weather is warm. The foot of the brewing vessel nestles perfectly into the dish beneath, while the curve of the lid perfectly echoes the curve of the bowl.
